Rodion Romanovich Raskolnikov
Who is Raskolnikov?
Raskolnikov is the main character in Dostoevsky’s book Crime and Punishment (1866). Dostoevsky describes him in the first chapter as such: “He was, by the way, exceptionally handsome, above the average in height, slim, well-built, with beautiful dark eyes and dark brown hair”.
The main plot of the book is that our dear Raskolnikov decides to murder a horrible pawn broker woman with an axe, which he does, but screws up badly, killing the woman’s sister as well. The rest of the book is him dealing with a mixture of fear being caught and guilt. He is sickly and dirty and mean and also faints a lot. He might be insane. Either way he is a little sexy and I adore him. He says and does horrible things but then he will turn around and do something startlingly nice - he has a good heart hidden under his layers of disdain for life and others.
"I am a little giddy, but that’s not the point, I am so sad, so sad... like a woman."
"Yes, that’s what it was! I wanted to become a Napoleon, that is why I killed her.... Do you understand now?"
"Is it possible that he has nothing but cowardice and fear of death to make him live?"
